Outreach

I organized the Darwin Day Roadshow in Tallahassee where groups of scientists present about evolution to celebrate Darwin's Birthday. I led graduate students from three departments to plan and teach lessons at three different events at local schools. We integrated our ideas across departments to get local school children excited about science!

I am passionate about engaging school aged children in the process and practice of science.  One way I do this is by volunteering as a judge at local science fairs.  Here I have the opportunity to talk with young people about their projects and future goals.  I also give them my contact information in case they have questions about life as a scientist.

I led a seminar about getting women involved in science for a local women's group (PEO).  I also engaged the group in a discussion about the process and practice of science.

As the chair of the graduate student advisory council (GSAC) for SSE, I represented graduate students and postdocs on the council.  In this role, I communicated with the executive council of the society and worked with the other five members of GSAC to develop practices and programs to support early career researchers (ECRs).  During my tenure as chair (2019) GSAC established the SSE blog, ran the SSEgrad Twitter page, planned and executed events at the Evolution meeting in Providence, RI,  designed "My First Presentation" Swag to promote ECRs at the Evolution meeting, worked with council to provide clear guidelines for the Graduate Research Excellence Grants, and reviewed applications for SSE grants.  During my time as a member of GSAC, I also worked with graduate students in the Evolution Tri-Society (SSE, American Society of NAturalists, and Society of Systematic Biologists) to develop and host Evolution Community Resources for Early Career Researchers when Evolution 2020 was cancelled.

As president of the Ecology and Evolution Research Discussion Group (EERDG) at Florida State University I organized weekly meeting of graduate students.  During our meetings we discussed graduate student issues in the department and presented research for feedback from our peers.  As president, I also acted as a liaison between the graduate students and faculty.
